ICTP PROGRAMME FOR TRAINING AND RESEARCH IN ITALIAN LABORATORIES

TRAINING AND RESEARCH IN ITALIAN LABORATORIES (TRIL) Programme has from 1983 been giving scientists from Third World, unhealthy Central and Eastern Europe who participate in International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) activities, treatment the opportunity to spend periods ranging from a few months to one year at Italian research laboratories of Universities, public and private research institutions, which operate in different branches of physics. This includes academic studies as well as practical applications and industrial projects. Follow up visits and long-term collaboration programmes are also envisaged.

  • The TRIL Programme complements the ICTP scientific activities as far as the experimental side is concerned
  • It offers the possibility of participating in frontier research programmes and of being trained in the use of advanced equipment.
  •  It offers the possibility of a sound selection as ICTP visitors can visit the laboratories in Italy in advanced
  • It has enthusiastic as well as generous collaboration from the Italian scientific community, mainly in Physics but not only.
  • It fosters regular collaborations between research groups of Italian and Developing Countries through follow-up visits.
  • It offers special projects supported by the MAE (Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs).
  • It is flexible, rapid and non-bureaucratic.

Agreements of collaboration have been established with the main Italian research institutions, i.e. CNR (National Research Council), INFN (National Institute for Nuclear Physics), ENEA (National Commission for New Technologies, Energy and Environment), ST (Sincrotrone Trieste), OGS (National Institute of Experimental Geophysics) and others. The laboratories offer participation in advanced research, as well as hospitality and financial support.

The scientific fields covered, which reflect activities held at the ICTP, are presently:

  • Physics of Condensed Matter
  • Physics and Energy
  • Physics and Technology
  • Earth and Environmental Sciences

How to apply?

Grants in a specific area are announced by a poster which contains a list of Italian laboratories agreeable to accept scientists from developing countries. A local committee then selects the applications in close collaboration with the hosting institution.

Announcements containing the list of Italian laboratories agreeable to host scientists are issued periodically and can be obtained at the following address:

The Adbus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics, ISTP Programme for Training and Research in Italian Laboratories, Via Beirut, 6, 34014 Trieste, Italy.
