Economist Visitors Programme

The European Commission’s Directorate General for Enterprise and Industry (DG ENTR) is seeking to attract leading economists in academia, sale international organisations, here governments, and top research institutions to participate in its Economist Visitors Programme.

Economist Visitors are invited for a short-term visit (normally for one or two weeks with the possibility of an extension of up to three months) to present and discuss research work and share their knowledge in the area of microeconomics and quantitative methods, namely in the areas of industrial policy and economic reforms. The general aim of the programme is to enhance the overall quality of work done by DG ENTR as well as strengthening in-house know-how by improving its connections with the economic research community.

The programme aims to give DG ENTR staff better access to on-going research work as well as to increase exposure to new approaches and insights on issues of relevance for DG ENTR. Economist Visitors will equally have an opportunity to experience the policy-making environment in which DG ENTR operates.

During their stay, Economist Visitors will be expected to interact with staff, present their research work to staff members, and if appropriate, prepare an accompanying seminar paper for eventual publication in the “Industrial Policy and Economic Reforms Papers” series of DG ENTR. Economist Visitors should also be available to discuss with, and if requested, to advise staff members on research problems pertinent to DG ENTR.

Interested economists are eligible to apply. Applications must meet the following selection criteria:

  1. Level of education that corresponds to completed university studies attested by a diploma in economics, preferably in microeconomics and quantitative methods
  2. Publications in the area of microeconomics and quantitative methods, namely in the areas of industrial policy and economic reforms

The European Union institutions and other bodies apply a policy of equal opportunities and accept applications without distinction on the grounds of sex, race, colour, ethnic or social origin, genetic features, language, religion, political or any other opinion, membership of a national minority, property, birth, disability, age or sexual orientation.

Economist Visitors (staying for one week in Brussels) receive a weekly honorarium of between €750 to €1,250 (depending upon experience), together with a daily subsistence allowance of €92 and an accommodation allowance of €100 per night.

Furthermore, the commission will reimburse travel costs according to current regulations in force.
